The specimen cited by Agardh was probably from the French expeditions of the late 18th early 19th centuries which would place this taxon on the northern WA coast. Later, Agardh 1889 Kongl. Svenska Vetenskapsakademiens Handlingar 23:104 indicates the taxon is from the warmer Australian waters.

This represents the protologue of Sargassum novae-hollandiae. Sargassum stenophyllum J. Agardh is a latter homonym of Sargassum stenophyllum Martius.
