  • Comment: C. Agardh Syst. Algarum p. 263 divided Zonaria pavonia into 3 sections, one of which was 'fuscescens'. He indicated that this may be a distinct species. The specimen data is 'Ad insulam Ravak'. Agardh 1948 Species genera et ordines Algarum I p. 113 appears to have placed Z. pavonica Agardh (Syst. Algarum, all varieties but var. tenuis) in Padina pavonia ( = Padina pavonica) thus removing the 'Ravak' specimen from the protologue of Z. fraseri. J. Agardh does not include the Ravak specimen in his account of Padina fraseri but does add the Wight Indian specimen to the Fraser specimen. According to Womersley 1987:218, Fraser (colonial botanist NSW) went to WA in 1829, 3 yrs after the collection of the specimen in the type statement. The specimen is very probably from the eastern states.
