  • Comment: According to Silva et al. 1996:603 Padina tenuis Bory de Saint Vincent, is based on a Commerson collection from Mauritius and not the material which C. Agardh used for the description of Z. pavonia var. tenuis (Syst. Alg. p. 264). The Commerson collection has been incorporated into Padina boryana. If you agree with Silva that Bory was misapplying the name P. tenuis or you believe that Bory was changing the rank of the Agardh variety of Zonaria pavonia C. Agardh, then the Commerson specimens form part of Padina boryana and all collections of Padina which have been called P. tenuis are P. boryana. If on the other hand you follow Womersley & Bailey 1970 Phil. Trans. Royal Soc Lond. 259:292-293 and believe that Bory was describing a new species and that Bory's reference to Agardh's Z. pavonia is irrelevant then P. boryana is a later name for P. tenuis and must be deemed illegitimate. Silva et al 1996 is followed in this database.
