Wood and others e.g., Balech indicate that the circumscription of this taxon has narrowed since it was first described by Stein. Wood 1954 Australian Journal of Marine & Freshwater Research 52:208 indicates that some of the dinoflagellates described in the literature under O. magnificus or Histoneis magnificus(a) represent O. thurni rather than O. magnificus.
